Is your A/C ready for the Houston Summer? Don’t wait till the HOT summer heat arrives to service your  A/C unit.  Spring is a great time to think about getting service before hot weather arrives and the rush for service is in full swing.  Whether you live in a rental or own your own home, preventative maintenance is essential in Houston's hot climate to prolong the life of your central air conditioning unit and ensure you're not left in the sweltering heat this summer. Taking the following few steps to ensure your unit is running as efficiently as possible can help offset cooling costs this summer.

Replace or clean the filter at least once every two months. Your filters catch dust, pollens and other allergens. And if it’s choked with dust and pet hair, it slows down the cold airflow, makes the system run harder and longer - and costs you more money.

Check the condenser. If it’s at ground level, clear away grass, weeds, plant, and other debris that might be blocking airflow.  Anything that collects on the unit’s fins will block airflow and reduce its efficiency.

Preventative Maintenance.  We recommend all homeowners hire a professional to run a maintenance inspection.  An inspection can eliminate larger expenses in the future, preventing breakdown before they occur. If you own your home, it's time to call a professional HVAC technician.

If you're renting,  remind your landlord or property management company to schedule maintenance before summertime. If you’ve done all the above, you’ve done everything you can do to keep your system running efficiently at the lowest possible cost. Author: Kevin Macicek
